“A great example is the recent trend for bathrooms with boarders and trims. A year ago that was the rage but now they look very old” explains Soucek, “so following the latest fad in bathroom design could leave saddled with an unfashionable, and expensive showpiece”

The quickest way to work wonders on your old bathroom is to give it a new coat of paint – even if you use the same colour as you currently have, the fresh coat with give it more life. Nude shades can add some style and panish but milder, translucent colours are more versatile and work in many different colours.

The best tip to remember is that if you want your bathroom to look more spacious, then go for light colours, ” And using the same tiles on the floor and the walls immediately makes a room feel bigger” adds Capitol Ceramics’ Katie Soucek. Alternatively, if you are looking to create a more dramatic space why not go for deep colours for a moody romantic atmosphere.

A simple change, such as replacing the bath mat or shower curtain, and make a big difference as can adding some bathroom accessories. Treat yourself to some fluffy new towels in a shade that matches the room’s colouring or even place a vinyl screen on your shower for some eye-catching glamour.

Mirrors help to reflect light around the room and bring it too life. Buy a selection of mirrors in a similar style and place them intelligently around the room so that all areas are covered. You can add some extra sophistication by buying some tasteful art or ornaments to sotfen the utility feel that a bathroom often has.

Katie Soucek discusses a recent project. “We’ve just completed work on a bathroom for a lovely client who wanted a ‘New England’ feel to her bathroom. We needed to create a sense of space and lightness in the room, so used simple white, mosaic tiles, coupled with tonal blues and biege stone. Then we selected a set of acrylic, glass and ceramic vases to line the shelves and finished it off with some gorgeous white cotton towels that give the room a wonderful feeling of luxury”

Soucek also highlights the importance of good lighting. “Recessed spot lighting is much more appealing than a central chord light or above-mirror lighting which can be too harsh and washout any colours within the room”

That said, your home interior doesn’t need to be the same colour all the way through and the colours you do choose will also be influenced by what aspect your house is (northerly, southerly etc) how much light you get in, which room it is etc. For example, it would not be wise to use an icy, cool colour on the cold side of the house that has little natural light or warmth!

The advantage of more neutral earthy tones is you can accessorise with your curtains, other furnishings, cushions etc to give it whatever feel you like. A neutral room can feel cool depending on the secondary and accent colours you put with it OR you change completely change the feel by adding ‘hot’ colours.

I would think you will have greater flexibility to change the mood and overall feel of your interior by having a warm, neutral pallette but in saying that consider all the factors when selecting a paint colour.

4. Current furnishings
5. Always view paint samples in natural light.

Remember, it’s only paint. Buy a test pot and splash the colours around on the walls and if it turns out to be really ugly once you’ve painted then it’s no great hardship to repaint!
